Founded in 2014, the Leg Up Fund is a tax exempt 501 (c)3 established to provide temporary financial assistance to jockeys and exercise riders in the immediate aftermath of a racing-related injury and provide support for other programs administered by the Minnesota HBPA and Chaplaincy at Canterbury Park.
The fund is supported each meet through per-start contributions from horse owners and jockeys. Public support has been a crucial component as well. Year-round sale of pull tabs, added this year, will also make a positive impact.
The annual Leg Up Fund Night at the Races is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17 with first post at 5 p.m. Tickets, $20 each, for a raffle to be held that evening are on sale now each race night near the paddock entrance. The prize is an electric scooter or $2,000 in cash with proceeds going to Leg Up. Also on Aug. 17 is an opportunity to meet the jockeys, bid on multiple silent auction items, make a direct donation, sponsor a rider or submerge a jockey in the dunk tank.
The Leg Up committee is looking for both silent auction donations and for volunteers to assist with operations on the evening of Aug. 17.
Donations can be dropped off at any time at the Security podium adjacent to the Casino. There is also a free-will donation box for cash contributions at that location.
A benefit No Limit Hold ‘em poker tournament is set for Monday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Canterbury Casino. Buy-in is $100, half of which benefits the Leg Up Fund. More details coming soon.
If you wish to volunteer on Aug. 17 call 952-496-6437 and leave a message.
