SATURDAY TV brings dark drama and more sporting delights (yes, England are playing rugby too!). There’s also culinary inspiration to help keep up your energy levels.
Here are TV Mag’s six telly picks for Saturday 6 July 2024…
End Of Summer (9pm BBC4)
Swedish psychological dramas have been making their mark on British TV viewers for many years and the Nordic noir genre shows no sign of waning in popularity as another twisting thriller – based on police officer Anders de la Motte’s bestselling novel – reaches our shores, starting with a double bill.
Vera (Julia Ragnarsson) is a psychologist with a tragic past.
She witnessed her mother, who had mental health issues, take her own life by drowning when she was just 12, which came shortly after the mysterious disappearance of her little brother.
Twenty years later, a man named Isak (Erik Enge) arrives at her grief counselling session claiming to have repressed memories of a childhood friend going missing – memories mirroring her own of Billy’s disappearance.
In Swedish with subtitles.
Prince & His Songs At The BBC (10pm BBC2)
His Purpleness is in the spotlight tonight, for a celebration of his appearances on BBC shows through the years.
There’s also a chance to enjoy other artists’ interpretations of his work, including Beyoncé, Muse and Tom Jones.
And another music legend lost too soon features too, namely Sinéad O’Connor who rose to fame with her haunting performance of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U.
The Chris McCausland Show (8.25am ITV1)
If you’ve had a heavy Friday night, chances are you’ll be in need of a laugh first thing on a Saturday.
Who better to deliver an energising shot of morning mirth and merriment than Chris McCausland, whose chat and entertainment show continues.
This week, Chris is joined by brilliant stand-up comedian Maisie Adam, plus there’ll be the usual mix of live music, fun and games.
Saturday Kitchen Live (10am BBC1)
It’s one of our favourite things to do on a Saturday morning – turn on the telly and be inspired to whip up something delicious that night.
And with Paul Ainsworth joining Matt Tebbutt in the kitchen today, we expect we’ll be trying to source the best Cornish seafood later on!
Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington is today’s studio guest, while we can expect Nigella Lawson and Hairy Bikers recipes from the archives.
Ainsley’s National Trust Cook Off (11.40am ITV1)
This week irrepressible Ainsley’s in Cambridge, challenging chefs Daniel Galmiche and Ruby Bhogal to a fun cooking contest at Wimpole Estate’s beautiful kitchen garden.
They’ll be attempting to rustle up a Dish of the Day that wins over a team of three tasters.
And their creations certainly sound delicious – with Pork Chop, Courgette, Tomatoes and Cavolo Nero up against Indian Spiced Lamb Kebab Rolls with Onion, Mint, Chilli and Coriander.
Meanwhile, Ainsley’s been potato-picking to make his Quick Flatbread Pizza with Charlotte Potatoes, Rosemary and Chilli Rings.
Not forgetting some edible flowers as a garnish!
International Rugby: New Zealand v England (7.30am Sky Sports Main Event)
England’s rugby stars kick off their short two-match tour of New Zealand against an All Blacks side likely to feature a number of new faces, following the retirement of several key players.
Despite that, Steve Borthwick’s men will still have a tough job on their hands, not least because England haven’t won in New Zealand for over 20 years.
Expect an intriguing game at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
