Turkish police detain 29 Afghan refugees
Following the expulsion of Afghan refugees without residency documents from Turkey, Turkish security forces detained 29 Afghan asylum seekers.
According to Turkish media reports, these Afghan citizens were identified and detained in a trailer in the city of Ağrı, Turkey.
The detainees were subsequently transferred to the immigration office in Ağrı after going through legal procedures, as reported.
Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported that security forces also detained the trailer driver.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, thousands have migrated through difficult routes via Iran, entering Turkey in hopes of reaching Europe. Some refugees have lost their lives along this journey.
In addition, Turkey has deported thousands of these individuals to Afghanistan over the past three years.
This comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan, prompting a surge in Afghan refugees seeking safety in neighboring countries like Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey.
However, Turkey’s increased enforcement and deportation efforts highlight a broader trend of countries tightening immigration policies amid rising political tensions and security concerns.
In Iran and Pakistan, similar policies have led to an uptick in forced deportations of Afghan refugees, adding to the humanitarian challenges faced by vulnerable populations already displaced by conflict and economic instability.
