PM Shehbaz meets Tajikistan president, highlights Pakistan’s investment potential

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan embarked on a two-day visit to Tajikistan on Tuesday. Mr. Sharif has already met with President Emomali Rahmon and Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda of the country.

Mr. Sharif stated that this visit aimed to discuss bilateral relations, trade, and regional connectivity. He emphasized on his official Twitter account, “We will elevate Pakistan-Tajikistan relations to a higher level through expanded cooperation between two brotherly countries.”

Earlier, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced that during his Tuesday visit, the Prime Minister would engage with Tajik officials on common interests such as enhancing bilateral cooperation, including regional connectivity, trade relations, people-to-people ties, and energy cooperation.

While statements from the governments of Pakistan and Tajikistan did not explicitly mention security cooperation and counter-terrorism efforts, the escalating threat of terrorism from Afghanistan to neighboring countries, particularly the ISIS threat, remains a mutual concern for Islamabad and Dushanbe.

The deteriorating security situation in Pakistan has been exacerbated by increased militant attacks, particularly targeting Pakistani officials, attributed largely to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

These attacks have significantly undermined stability across various regions of the country, posing severe challenges to national security forces and local administrations.

Amid these developments, Pakistani officials have alleged that the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) received sanctions and support from the Afghan Taliban, further complicating the security landscape. However, the Afghan Taliban has vehemently denied these allegations, stressing their commitment to maintaining peace within Afghanistan’s borders and refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of neighboring countries like Pakistan.

Accompanying Mr. Sharif on this journey are Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Khawaja Asif, and Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, Pakistan’s Foreign, Defense, and Intelligence Ministers, respectively.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that Mr. Sharif will travel to Kazakhstan after Tajikistan to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
