White Sox Minor League Update: June 30, 2024

Rain hammers the East Coast, the Barons get shut out, and the Dash had the only redeeming performance of the day

Charlotte Knights 4, Norfolk Tides 4 (Suspended) (Gameday box) (Statcast box)
The Knights fell behind earlier in the game after Sean Burke gave up a home run in the bottom of the first, and although another run scored in the third, he only gave up two hits and was otherwise efficient. The run support came a bit later, with Jared Walsh blasting a three-run shot in the seventh to tie the game at three!

Rafael Ortega was also clutch in the eighth, driving Bryan Ramos in to take the lead heading into the ninth.

Joe Barlow, Matt Foster, and Adisyn Coffey were clutch out of the bullpen, giving up one hit among the three of them. But the rain had already picked up with Deivi García on the mound in the bottom of the ninth, and an RBI single allowed the tying run for the Tides to score.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know who will win this game, as the game was delayed right after that and was ultimately suspended. Imagine, the home team keeping the game going until tied!

We’ll hold the game polls until this game goes final, so stay tuned for the final result — the ninth inning (and possibly extra innings) finish out on July 30 at Charlotte’s Truist Field.

Tennessee Smokies 6, Birmingham Barons 0 (Gameday box)
Ky Bush had the start for the Barons, and although he gave up just one run, he struggled a bit with his control. He gave up just one run on three hits, but sadly that one hit was a long ball, and he also walked the same amount of batters as he struck out (four) — so that should just cancel out, right? I think that’s how it works. But Ky still has a 2.12 ERA, third-best in the Southern League.

Bush had a strong, 1-2-3 first inning, with the help of a Brooks Baldwin diving play up the middle:

The problem with the homers today was that all of the Smokies runs were scored that way. Juan Then and Jake Palisch also had a difficult time with their control, walking more than they struck out, and giving up five runs between them.

Meanwhile Birmingham batters were hibernating the entire game, allowing Tennessee to shut them out and allow just one hit — congrats to Matt Hogan to bearing the load of the offense Sunday.

Winston-Salem Dash 12, Rome Emperors 8 (Gameday box)
Both the Dash and the Emperors exploded offensively today, and on the defensive end, each of the teams wound up with one pitcher making quite a mess of an inning — but Winston-Salem was able to whip up a few more hits, leading them to a win, 12-8.

Riley Gowens’ three-hit, two-run outing wasn’t too shabby, although he, again, gave up a home run. The good news is that it didn’t really matter, as the Dash immediately followed it up by getting one run back in the bottom of the first, and another three runs in the second at the hands of Mario Camilletti and DJ Gladney.

Camilletti was HOT today, and tacked on another three RBIs in the bottom of the fourth after a three-run shot to right! Winston-Salem went up, 7-2, and the fun wouldn’t stop there.

The Dash scored three more runs while still in the fourth inning, and just like that they were up, 10-2.

Corey Knebel came in to relieve in the top of the sixth, and he didn’t even last two outs before giving up five runs and give the Emperors unnecessary momentum after W-S had just scored nine unanswered.

Yon Castro and Jared Kelley were able to put the Emperors away and secure the 12-8 win, but not without giving up one more run, however. It was quite the journey to get this W.

Columbia Fireflies 7, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 3 (Gameday box)
The Kannapolis defense took a long trip on the struggle bus on Sunday, committing four errors that allowed five unearned runs — which ended up being the difference of the game in the end. It’s a bit of a shame that Lucas Gordon received a loss on three unearned runs — if only they could charge the defense with the loss. Gordon also picked off two runners today, which shouldn’t count for nothing!

The other main issue with the Cannon Ballers was that the offense did not provide efficient run support. As a team, they left 12 runners on base, and also went 0-for-12 with RISP — they essentially fell flat.

Luis Pineda, Albertson Asigen and Mikey Kane all had decent performances at the plate, but no one could come through with the timely hitting to get all the runs back.
