On a day that went from sunny and warm to soaking wet, the New York Mets and Houston Astros faced off in the rubber match of a weekend series at Citi Field. After the Mets came back late from an Astros barrage early, Houston would pile on extra runners in the 10th and 11th innings to defeat New York 10-5.
From the beginning, Houston took advantage of their chances, with Jon Singleton launching a home run to center field in the second inning, putting the Astros ahead 1-0. In the top of the fourth, Yainer Diaz‘s line drive single to right fielder DJ Stewart scored Alex Bregman and moved Yordan Alvarez to third, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Astros continued to apply pressure in the fourth and fifth innings, making it 4-0. Although Luis Severino struggled initially, giving up four runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts on 79 pitches, he managed to settle down and prevent further scoring.
Meanwhile, the Mets showed some offensive promise in the second inning with hard-hit balls, including a 109.9 mph lineout, a 106.1 mph lineout, a walk, and a 105.2 mph lineout, but couldn’t capitalize, ending the inning trailing 1-0. By the end of the fifth inning, the Astros’ bullpen had held the Mets hitless. However, Mark Vientos delivered a crucial two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning, cutting Houston’s lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brandon Nimmo hit his 100th career home run to left-center field with a runner on base, tying the game at four. Adrian Houser provided the stability the Mets needed from their bullpen, navigating around a double in the top of the eighth and pitching two solid innings to keep the game tied. Luis Torrens showcased his defensive skills by throwing out pinch-runner Joey Loperfido attempting to steal second in the top of the ninth and Chas McCormick in the tenth.
A two-hour-and-47-minute rain delay paused the action going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Mets couldn’t score. Houston managed to bring the free runner home to take the lead, but the Mets responded with Nimmo driving in Francisco Lindor to tie the game at five, continuing his strong afternoon.
Both bullpens fared well, outside of the two chances with the free runner on second base until Houston attacked newly called-up Mets pitcher Matt Festa for five runs in the eleventh to seal the deal for the Astros.

Since being acquired about a month ago from the Yankees, Luis Torrens has been a productive backup to Francisco Alvarez both with the bat and his defense. Since joining the Mets and including Sunday, Torrens would throw out his fifth and sixth runners in eight attempts, as he threw out the Astros runner attempting to steal second in the top of the ninth and another runner in the tenth.
Brandon Nimmo had himself a strong game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, with two of those runs coming from a 2-run home run that tied the game and was also the 100th of Nimmo’s career.
The Mets begin a long road trip tomorrow that starts in Washington D.C. against the Nationals. David Peterson (3-0, 3.67 ERA) gets the nod for the Mets, while MacKenzie Gore toes the slab for Washington. First pitch is at 6:45 pm ET and will be broadcast on SNY and WCBS 880 AM.
