British hiker, 70, found dead in Pyrenees days after going missing
A British hiker has been found dead in the Pyrenees in Spain days after he went missing on the mountain.
The 70-year-old man, from London, who has not been named, was reported missing on Monday in the western Pyrenees.
It sparked a search and rescue operation to locate him on the mountain range between France and Spain.
The alarm was raised at around 6pm on Monday after the authorities were contacted by Interpol’s UK office based in Manchester with the co-ordinates of an electronic bracelet he was wearing, the BBC reports.
They were concerned he could be injured or lost.
But help came too late for the hiker as his body was located on Thursday at 1pm local time near the Aspe peak by rescue specialists from the Guardia Civil.
The Spanish Guardia Civil said the man was found by three members of the searchand rescue team who alerted the air unit, which took him to a nearby mountain refuge, according to the broadcaster.
Aspe peak, located in the Huesca area of Pyrenees, is around 8,677 ft tall.
Pyrenees, which is popular but also a demanding area for hikers, has claimed lives before.
In 2020, an experienced British hiker Esther Dingley, 37, went missing on a solo walk in the mountains.
She is thought to have slipped and fallen up to 100ft into a rocky crevice.
The latest heartbreaking discovery in the Pyrenees comes as search for the missing teenager Jay Slater in Tenerife intensifies.
A friend of Jay’s Brad Hargreaves has said he heard him slip on rocks during their final call.
