ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — This week on Empire State Weekly, the 2024 primary elections finished producing the matchups that will be on the ballot in November. State Senator Jacob Ashby a Republican Representing the 43rd District, commented on the primaries. He explained that larger national issues like migration and border policy will impact the races at the state level.
"It's largely a federal issue we can't ignore that and we need both parties to work together to develop good policy on this, I don't think it's gonna effectively from one party you can see executive orders come from this but executive orders can come and go you need good legislation in order to have good sound policy that's going to last," said Ashby.
Also this week Cianna Freeman-Tolbert an immigration lawyer with Whiteman Osterman & Hanna explained the several significant developments that now face incoming asylum seekers. She explained that while some positive steps have been taken more support is needed.
"We need more money for legal representation, nonprofits are out there trying to help individuals who are seeking asylum, and so we are seeing that with the new budget, we saw them put money towards that, but there's a lot more coordination that could help with that effort, especially people coming from the city to upstate New York," said Freeman-Tolbert.
