US State Dept confirms representatives’ participation in Doha meeting

The U.S. State Department has announced that Thomas West and Rina Amiri, Washington’s special representatives for Afghanistan, will participate in the upcoming third Doha meeting.

Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, confirmed the country’s representatives’ attendance at a press briefing held on Wednesday, June 26th.

The U.S. has confirmed its participation in the Doha meeting at a time when the absence of Afghan women and civil society representatives has drawn strong criticism.

Rina Amiri, the U.S. special representative for Afghan women’s affairs, whose attendance at the Doha meeting was confirmed by Matthew Miller the day before, had previously stated in response to the agenda of the Doha meeting that Afghan-related meetings without women’s participation would not yield results.

The third Doha meeting is scheduled to take place in Qatar in the coming days, led by Rosemary DiCarlo, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General.

The upcoming third Doha meeting comes amid ongoing concerns about the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly the restrictions on women and the absence of their representation in crucial discussions.

International criticism has mounted over excluding Afghan women and civil society members from these dialogues, seen as pivotal for shaping the country’s future.
