China calls for improved education for girls in Afghanistan
China’s Special Representative for Afghanistan has called on the Taliban to uphold their commitments regarding girls’ education and improve access to schooling in Afghanistan.
Yu Xiaoyong, China’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, made these remarks in an interview with an Iranian media outlet.
Furthermore, China’s Special Representative for Afghanistan added that the Taliban regime has stated its interest in improving the situation of girls’ education.
Meanwhile, it has been over a thousand days since girls above sixth grade in Afghanistan have been deprived of attending school.
Recently marking the thousand-day milestone of the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the country, expressed support for Afghan girls, stating, “We must stand with girls.”
This comes as the Taliban regime, since coming to power in August 2021, has banned girls above sixth grade from attending schools. As of now, there has been no indication of efforts to resume education for girls above sixth grade in Afghanistan.
Amid the Doha meeting, Afghanistan faces severe human rights challenges, exacerbated by the absence of women’s representatives and human rights advocates. This exclusion highlights ongoing concerns about inclusivity and rights protection in the peace process.
The decision not to invite these crucial voices has sparked international criticism, underscoring the need for comprehensive and inclusive dialogue that addresses the rights and representation of the people of Afghanistan.
