‘It’s been a privilege’ says BBC legend in sad farewell as he steps down from show after 27 years
A BBC presenter has confirmed their exit from the broadcaster after a whopping 27 years.
The 76-year-old will say a fond farewell to radio broadcasting after making the decision to leave his beloved programme.
Sean Rafferty has been the long-standing host of BBC Radio 3’s InTune programme for more than 25 years but will now be saying goodbye to the show for good.
He is expected to host his final programme before April of next year amid a schedule shake-up on the BBC.
Sean revealed his impending departure in a statement where he likened his hosting role to being a “privilege”.
The star said: “I shall miss the truly remarkable and life-enhancing musicians, many coming to the studio ever since they began their careers: a joy.
“And to be able to share it all with the listeners at home: a privilege. They’ve been like family.”
Sean’s lengthy career has seen him achieve huge milestones during his time at Radio 3.
In 2004, he picked up a prestigious gong for Radio Presenter of the Year at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.
He further went on to receive an MBE in 2017 for his services to broadcasting.
Sean will be replaced in the role by another regular BBC Radio 3 face Petroc Trelawny.
Petroc will team up with former Strictly Come Dancing star Katie Derham to be the new co-hosts of In Tune.
Petroc moves to the show having been a regular face on the station’s flagship Breakfast show.
Sean’s exit comes just days after another BBC star confirmed that they would be leaving the channel.
BBC newscaster Aaron Heslehurst walked away after more than 22 years.
Originally hailing from Australia, Aaron has been a BBC business news presenter since 2002 and presented across all of their television channels.
He took to X – formerly Twitter – to share news of his farewell, penning: “I guess it’s time to share something with you.
“This week will be my very last show at the BBC.
“After 30yrs in TV news and 22.5 of them at the BBC, it’s time to close this chapter!
“For those who’ve enjoyed my shows over the years, I say THANK YOU. It’s been an honour & a privilege.”
