Manchester United remain in talks with the representatives of Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee over a potential transfer, according to The Athletic.
The Red Devils currently have Rasmus Hojlund as their main centre-forward, but manager Erik ten Hag is eyeing another young striker to provide competition.
Zirkzee is the preferred target for the Dutch tactician and it is reported that the club continue to remain in discussions with the player’s entourage.
United’s interest in Zirkzee is advanced, but they are likely to discuss payment terms with Bologna than paying his £34 million release clause in one go.
The club are also assessing the agent commissions and salary demands of the striker.
The 23-year-old had a decent second season with Bologna. He scored 12 goals and provided seven assists from 37 appearances across all competitions.
The former Bayern Munich man also caught the eye with his quick dribbling, hold-up play and ability to press opposition defenders with his terrific speed.
He has the attributes that Ten Hag could be looking for. United’s main concern over Zirkzee could be his preference. He has the desire to continue in Serie A.
If United manage to persuade him, he would be a good signing with the low transfer fee involved.
Zirkzee, who was described as a ‘powerful‘ striker by Bayern II manager Holger Seitz, could be handed a fair chance to compete for a starting position with Hojlund.
Hojlund scored goals in different phases of last season but just like Zirkzee, the Dane has yet to find consistency. Competition is vital to get the best out of him.
