According to the print edition of The Sun (23/06, page 56 via TBR Football), Manchester City and Liverpool are ready to challenge Tottenham Hotspur for Leeds United’s Archie Gray.
Several outlets over the last couple of weeks have suggested that Gray is one of Tottenham’s top targets to replace Emerson Royal, who is expected to depart N17 this summer.
If Royal does depart, Spurs will need a new right-back to offer both support and competition to Pedro Porro, especially with Tottenham being back in Europe.
This includes an update from Football.London’s Alasdair Gold a few days ago, in which he stated that Tottenham have been put off by Leeds’ £50m asking price for the 18-year-old while the youngster is also not overly keen on leaving Elland Road.
However, The Sun have now claimed that Leeds are willing to cash in on Gray due to their financial problems, asserting that an offer of £20m would be enough to sign the right-back.
The report states that Spurs are of the belief that the England Under-21 international would thrive in Ange Postecoglou’s system but they would have to see off competition from Manchester City and Liverpool to land the player.
The publication adds that Borussia Dortmund have also shown interest in Gray but they are expected to withdraw from the race after being put off by Leeds’ asking price.
Spurs Web Opinion
It is quite astonishing that The Sun have put Leeds’ asking price for Gray at just £20m, which is less than half of the figure that the other outlets have reported.
Despite the Yorkshire club’s perilous financial situation and need for quick cash, one would have thought that they could still make over £30m from the right-back sale if a bidding war gets going.
