The fans were not satisfied with Sunil Gavaskar’s conflicting appraisal of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s dismissals during the 2024 T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh, and the legendary Indian batsman has been targeted on social media. India had jumped out to a fast start in the powerplay with to Rohit Sharma’s rapid 11-ball 23. But Kohli, who scored 37 off 28 balls, had a more controlled innings. Even while Gavaskar commended Indian captain Rohit for his selflessness, he was more critical of Virat’s dismissal. Fans of India’s No. 18 have a lot of negative reactions to this.
While attempting to play a lofted shot off of Shakib’s bowling, Rohit was out. But in that same over, he had already hit a four and a six. Rohit’s aggressive approach and desire were commended by Gavaskar.
“Someone who has hit 10 runs in two balls would not go for a big shot, but for Rohit Sharma, it is all about the team,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Indian fans would have forgotten all about the 2023 World Cup Final had it not been for Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, as even then, he had been removed after scoring heavily in the same over.
Kohli was well on his way to 37 against Bangladesh, following a weak start to the cup. Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Bangladesh’s fast bowler, bowled Kohli out for a clean 20 on an uncommonly slower delivery.
“What was he thinking? Should have played inside out,” was Gavaskar’s reaction.
On social media, a few of fans expressed their displeasure at Gavaskar’s response to Rohit and Kohli’s dismissals. On X, supporters called the former Indian hitter a “hypocrite” and “biased”.
It’s not fans but the commentators like Sunil Gavaskar who create the difference between the fans and players,” said one user, criticising Gavaskar’s opinion.
India reached a formidable total of 196-5 in 20 overs because to the innings of Rohit and Kohli, as well as strong efforts from Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Shivam Dube. Bangladesh tried to chase it but were 50 runs short.
At the current 2024 T20 World Cup, India has most likely guaranteed a semi-final place.
