In its nearly 55-year history, the iconic Adidas Superstar has undergone countless transformations. It’s been draped in different materials and colors, reworked by brands such as A Bathing Ape and Prada and even turned into a skateboarding shoe. Yet its latest reimagining, a new collaboration with Chinese streetwear brand Clot, may be the most drastic yet.
Debuted in a series of images by sneaker photographer Tyler Mansour is the upcoming Clot x Adidas Dress Superstar. The shoe continues the design language established by Clot’s Edison Chen on previous Adidas collaborations which have blended the sportswear brand’s retro athletic shoes with a more formal-leaning look.
While previous Clot x Adidas releases have been somewhat restrained in their sophistication, the Clot x Adidas Dress Superstar goes all-in on dressiness. The entire shoe has been given a tonal black treatment in shiny smooth leather, allowing the Three Stripes side branding to blend in more than it did on Clot’s last Superstar. The rippled bottom of that pair has also been replaced with a leather hard-bottom sole on the Dress Superstar. Tassel shoelaces complete the elegant look.
Clot’s most recent output with Adidas was its Gazelle collaboration, which was released Friday. K-pop star Jennie Kim of Blackpink was featured as the face of the campaign for that sneaker.
The Adidas Superstar originally debuted in 1970 as a low-top basketball shoe and was notable for its leather upper and protective rubber shell toe. In the ’80s, the Superstar was one of the first elements of hip-hop style to cross over into the mainstream thanks to rap group Run-DMC.
There is currently no release date for the Clot x Adidas Dress Superstar, but more details should be announced soon. For now, fans can view detailed images below.
