After many months of disappointing showings at the box office, June seems to have fully recovered with Pixar having its biggest hit since pre-pandemic. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Disney released Pixar’s sequel “Inside Out 2” into 4,400 theaters after it scored a terrific 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The voices of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black, were joined by new emotions voiced by Maya Hawke, Ayo Edebiri and Adèle Exarchopoulos, but the success of the original Oscar-winning movie in 2015 drove millions to theaters to be the first to experience the sequel.
“Inside Out 2” managed to rack up $13 million in Thursday previews, which was added into Friday for a $62 million opening day. Disney is estimating that the animated sequel will gross $155 million domestically over the Father’s Day weekend. Not only is that the first $100 million opening of the year, but it’s also the first movie to hit that milestone opening since “Barbie” last July, though “Inside Out 2” fell just short of that movie’s $162 million opening, at least according to Sunday estimates. Either way, that’s the second-best opening for an animated film ever after 2018’s Pixar sequel “The Incredibles 2,” which opened with $182.7 million.

“Inside Out 2” received an “A” CinemaScore, the same as the earlier Oscar-winning film, which means it could continue to thrive over the next few weeks with schools being out for the summer.
Overseas, “Inside Out 2” also did fantastically, bringing in $140 million in 38 markets for a global opening of $295 million. $30.2 million of that amount came from Mexico, with another $14.9 million from South Korea and $13.9 million from the UK, making Pixar’s latest a huge worldwide blockbuster in its opening weekend. $14.5 million of that opening weekend came from IMAX screens, with $11 million of that amount from domestic IMAX theaters.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s action-comedy sequel “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” crossed the $100 million mark domestically with a second weekend of $33 million, down just 42%, to take second place in its second weekend. “Ride or Die” has grossed $112.2 million domestically, while also helping the “Bad Boys” franchise cross the billion mark worldwide over the course of four movies, going back to 1995. The new installment has crossed the $200 million mark globally, with another $30.8 million grossed overseas this weekend, bringing its international total to $102.4 million.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” took advantage of “Inside Out 2” taking over most of the family business to make a move back into third place with $5.2 million, a minuscule drop of just 4%, which is fairly astounding. It has grossed $157.8 million domestically since opening in May, allowing it to remain the biggest movie of the summer, at least for a few more days. “Apes” added another $3.4 million overseas this weekend to bring its global total to $374.5 million. China is the top overseas market, having grossed $28.9 million there, followed by France with $22.4 million.
The release of a major new family film had an adverse effect on the summer’s other family releases, “The Garfield Movie” and “IF,” both which took massive tumbles, though “Garfield” should still end up in fourth place for the weekend with $5 million (down 50%) if Sunday estimates stand. “The Garfield Movie” has amassed $78.5 million domestically, so it might have a tough time joining the $100 million club, but overseas, it added another $7.2 million this weekend to bring its global total to $217.8 million.
John Krasinski’s family fantasy “IF” dropped to fifth place with $3.5 million (down 56%), as it also crossed $100 million domestically this weekend. “IF” made another $3.6 million in 66 international markets with a $360k opening in Japan in 295 theaters and $250k opening in 6,200 locations in China. Its global total is at $173.6 million, so far.
Considering its poor reviews and low CinemaScore, Ishana Shyamalan’s thriller “The Watchers” had a much smaller drop in its second weekend than expected, falling 48% to sixth place with $3.7 million and $13.7 total domestically.
On the other hand, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” dropped to seventh place with $2.4 million, down 43%, as it finished its fourth weekend with just $63.1 million in North America.

There were a number of more moderate releases this weekend, though none of them were able to crack the Top 10. Bleecker Street released Julia von Heinz’s dramedy “Treasure,” starring Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry, into 650 theaters on Friday, but it only made $243.9k, averaging only $374 per theater.
A24 expanded the Julia Louis-Dreyfus fantasy, “Tuesday,” into 654 theaters where it only did slightly better than “Treasure” with $292.5k or $447 per location.
Just about every player in the box office prediction game had “Inside Out 2” winning the weekend, but only five players had it making more than $125 million this weekend, and those five players stand the best chance at getting perfect scores. That is, if not for the fact that “Apes” has moved back into third place according to estimates, and only TWO players picked that correctly.
The June 7 game was a bit of a disaster with only a single player, “tootsie1915,” getting 5 out of 6 correct, although the highest point score was (who else?) “MellowDrama” with 9,750 points.
Jeff Nichols’ motorcycle drama, “The Bikeriders,” starring Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, and Austin Butler, will open on Friday, as well as a few other things, so check back on Wednesday for the weekend preview.
