Phillies Injury Updates: Will Brandon Marsh and Trea Turner return this weekend?

The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

• Brandon Marsh (right hamstring strain)
• Status: 10-day injured list
• The Phillies placed Marsh on the 10-day injured list on June 3. Without committing to a timeline, Marsh did seem optimistic about returning in relatively short order, saying he was “looking for a pretty quick turnaround.” When asked to give a grade on Marsh’s hamstring strain, Thomson joked “half,” giving you an idea of how mild it was.
• After DHing for Double-A Reading Thursday, Marsh will play between seven and nine innings in center field Friday for the Fightin Phils. Manager Rob Thomson said to the media in Baltimore that there isn’t any significance to him play center as opposed to left, although he will get to test his hammy out even more at that spot.
• When asked if Marsh could be activated Saturday if all goes well Friday night with Reading, Thomson said “I think there might be a possibility,” but noted that would be dependent upon how things go in the game. Thomson didn’t think Marsh would need an off day before being activated, unless he has to have a third rehab game. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 14.)

• Trea Turner (left hamstring strain)
• Status: 10-day injured list
• Turner was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain on May 4. He declined to reveal what grade the strain is, but said he expects to miss “six weeks or so.”
• The 30-year-old shortstop told NBC Sports Philadelphia‘s Corey Seidman in London that “I prefer not to do it,” in regards to going on a rehab assignment. Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper are among the veteran players who have returned from injuries in recent seasons without going on a rehab stint.
• Turner did “more game-like stuff” in his rehab Friday in Baltimore, which included start-and-stops and late holds at third base, per Thomson. The manager added “I don’t think we’re gonna activate him tomorrow.” The plan is to put him through a similar workout Saturday. When asked, Thomson said that a return Sunday is “not out of play.” (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 14.)

• J.T. Realmuto (right knee surgery)
• Status: 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 10
• The Phillies announced on June 11 that Realmuto had been placed on the injured list with right knee pain. He underwent successful right knee meniscectomy surgery on June 12. At the time of his placement on the IL, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski estimated the team would be without Realmuto for “about a month” following the completion of his procedure.
• Realmuto is not with the Phillies in Baltimore, but Thomson said he’s walking normally and got on the stationary bike Friday. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 14.)

• Yunior Marte (right shoulder inflammation)
• Status: 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 1
• Marte “felt a little something” after his scoreless appearance against the San Diego Padres on April 28, Thomson said. After the feeling went away, it really “flared up” during his appearance against the Los Angeles Angels on April 30. He wasn’t available during the final game of the Angels series, and ultimately was placed on the injured list on May 3.
• Marte began a rehab assignment on May 25 with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He allowed two hits and an unearned run on 15 pitches in one inning of work.
• Marte is still with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Per Thomson, he’s scheduled to pitch an inning on Tuesday, another inning on Thursday and two innings on Sunday. (Updated by Bailey Digh on June 4.)

• Luis Ortiz (right shoulder inflammation)
• Status: 15-day injured list
• Ortiz has been on the injured list since March 31 with a left ankle sprain. He has progressed from that injury, even making two rehab appearances for Single-A Clearwater. However, the most recent came on April 25. That’s because he was shut down for a period with right shoulder inflammation.
• Ortiz threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, according to Thomson. (Updated by Bailey Digh on June 4.)

• Michael Rucker (right hand arterial vasospasm)
• Status: 60-day injured list
• Rucker threw a bullpen session on May 14, and is set to throw another one on May 17.
• Rucker was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list on June 3. (Updated by Bailey Digh on June 4.)

• Dylan Covey (right shoulder strain)
• Status: 60-day injured list
• Covey is still dealing with his shoulder strain, and was backed off of throwing. As he was doing some conditioning work, he also slightly pulled a hamstring. He was in Philadelphia on May 8 seeing team doctors, but was expected to head back to Clearwater on May 10.
• Covey was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list on June 1. (Updated by Bailey Digh on June 4.)
