The Daily Mail have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are one of several clubs who are willing to testify against Manchester City after the Premier League champions declared war against the Premier League’s spending rules.
City, who will face 115 charges of breaking Premier League spending rules in November, have preemptively launched an unprecedented legal action against the League.
It is explained that the champions say the current system is a result of the ‘tyranny of the majority’ and claim it is discriminatory against clubs with owners from the Middle East.
A two-week hearing on the matter will begin next Monday, with City not only seeking changes to the spending rules but also claiming damages.
The Mail explain that Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle are sympathetic to City’s cause and believe the champions have valid concerns ahead of the hearing.
However, between 10 and 12 clubs, including Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal, Wolves, Fulham and Brighton, have provided information in support of the Premier League.
Some of these clubs are said to have provided statements in support of the league while others have provided letters, with The Mail describing the situation as a ‘civil war’.
Spurs Web Opinion
This is clearly a battle between clubs who think there should be spending restrictions to have a level playing field and those who think that clubs should be allowed to spend with impunity.
If the latter wins this case, it will be a significant blow for the Premier League as a competition, with the tournament likely to become about the net worth of the owners rather than about sporting merit.
It does leave a sour taste in the mouth when clubs like City have just thrown money at everything to get glory when Tottenham is strictly run as a business.
