Topeka officer earning $228/day after DUI arrest

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The city of Topeka said a police officer is earning his full salary while on leave following an arrest for driving under the influence.

The officer was off duty when he was arrested on Saturday. He was booked into the Shawnee County Jail at 3:25 a.m. 27 News does not typically name suspects in DUI cases.

According to a 27 News records request, the officer was placed on paid administrative with a salary of $57,020 per year, or $228.08 per day.

The city is also conducting an internal investigation in addition to the criminal investigation. According to the city, officers have different guidelines for paid leave than other city employees. A city spokesperson said the differences are due to various union contracts.

"The City of Topeka works to complete investigations as quickly as possible but will also make sure all the appropriate steps are taken to ensure a thorough investigation is completed," said Dan Garrett, city spokesman.
