‘It’s such a shame’ cry shoppers as major bargain chain with over 850 branches to shut another ex-Wilko store

SHOPPERS have been left fuming after a major bargain chain with over 850 branches went on to shut another ex-Wilko store.

Poundland is set to close its shop in Alnwick, Northumberland, just seven months after it took on the former Wilko unit.

The Lagny Street store, which opened last November, will close its doors on July 2.

In a social media post, the discount retailer said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the permanent closure of Poundland Alnwick on the 2nd July.

Gutted shoppers took their frustration to Facebook, with one user commenting: “The best shop in Alnwick. It’s a shame it’s closing down.”

“We are incredibly grateful for your loyal support over the last seven months.”

Another wrote: “It’s disgusting that this is happening! Amazing shop with lots of variety, and lovely staff!

“How on earth is it acceptable for Poundland to close and pound stretcher to stay open!!

“No kids clothes in this town unless u want to spend a fortune, shocking!”

Poundland has not offered an official comment.

But the bargain shop confirmed the closure is due to it not being able to agree a lease “that would enable us to keep trading”.

Poundland previously stated that their new stores were part of an ambitious mission to service new areas and generate jobs by creating businesses that consumers and communities could be proud of.

The bargain chain is making huge changes at more stores within weeks in a big boost to shoppers.

Shoppers will soon be able to able to browse clothing, homeware and chilled and frozen food at dozes more Poundland stores.

It’s part of a huge new makeover project that the chain is calling “Project Evo” and some renovations have already been completed.

This includes sites in Urmston, Greater ManchesterWolverhamptonWest Midlands and Leeds Crown Point.

In total, 150 stores will receive makeovers between now and August 2024.

Shops in New Malden, Nottingham and West Bromwich.

After the alterations, all the stores will offer more baby and kids clothing for parents on a budget.

The introduction of chilled food will give shoppers the chance to pick up items from Poundland’s popular frozen food ranges.

Shoppers will also be able to pick up Poundlands £3 meal deal in each location.

Poundland’s commercial director Tim Bettley said: “There’s been a transformation underway at Poundland for quite some time.

“With our significant investment in ranges, stores and service, it’s now the right time to invite customers who haven’t seen what we now offer, to come and take a look for themselves at the changes we’ve made.”
