BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn (PIX11) – Two girls were shot in a Brooklyn park Monday night, according to the NYPD.
The shooting happened at a Brownsville park at the corner of Dean and Thomas S. Boyland streets around 9:20 p.m. Two gunmen allegedly fired six shots, according to authorities.
Police believe the two girls, ages 9 and 11, were not the intended targets and were caught in the crossfire.
"The mother of the 11-year-old was watching from the park bench as the children were playing in the field," said NYPD Deputy Chief John Mastronardi. "The children came into the park to play, and as you can see behind us, their Crocs are still on the field."
The 11-year-old girl was shot in the back and the 9-year-old girl was shot in her right leg, according to authorities.
A family member drove both girls to Brookdale Hospital, sources told PIX11 News. The 9-year-old was later transferred to Maimonides Hospital.
Video of the incident showed the two gunmen shooting at someone else, according to authorities. Police said they're not ruling out that the shooting could be gang-related.
