A motorist died in a fiery car crash in Weston early Sunday, officials said.
Broward Sheriff’s deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire-Rescue responded to a vehicle fire near Bonaventure Boulevard and State Road 84 at about 3:30 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office, where first responders found a car “fully engulfed in flames.”
The vehicle had been involved in a single-car crash, Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis said via text. When the fire was extinguished, the driver was found and pronounced dead. The driver was a man, but the sheriff’s office said in a statement late Sunday afternoon that he was so badly burned his identity was still unknown.
BSO said its preliminary investigation found the driver of the 2024 Tesla Model 3 was traveling eastbound on State Road 84 approaching Bonaventure Boulevard.
As the Tesla entered the U-turn lane to proceed under the Interstate 75 overpass, the driver “failed to negotiate the turn” and drove off the road. It struck a support column for the I-75 overpass, the sheriff’s office said, and was quickly engulfed in flames.
Bonaventure Boulevard was closed at the on-ramp to State Road 84 for several hours Sunday morning. The City of Weston posted on social media that the road was reopened shortly before 8 a.m.
It is unclear what caused the crash, a sheriff’s office spokesperson said. Traffic homicide detectives were investigating
