Elephant Rumblings: Rockies series finale, Miller gaining hype, Coliseum sold

Happy Thursday everyone!

The Athletics lost a close one last night, falling to the Colorado Rockies in 12 innings. It was a frustrating game in a lot of ways, namely the inability to take advantage of the few opportunities the team had against the Colorado pitching staff. They were given runners in scoring position two times and failed to score in the 10th and 11th innings, then scored a run in the 12th only when the Rockies had struck first. Add in the fact the starting pitcher lasted less than three innings and the bullpen was fantastic, and you can see why it was a disappointing game. They can still secure the series win this afternoon, and they’ll be turning to rookie Joey Estes to help do just that.

Mason Miller is gaining more and more attention the more he pitches. Already the subject of early trade rumors and speculation, Miller just keeps his head down and pumped straight heat every time he enters the game. We knew he has high octane stuff but it’s gone up another level with the move to the bullpen. And now Miller is making history during this crazy run. Here’s to hoping we get to see him pitch for the Athletics for a long time.

Off the field, yesterday it was announced that the city of Oakland had sold its share of the Coliseum to a private investor, escaping involvement in the complex and netting the city some much needed cash. The city had owned 50% of the stake and that will now transfer over to the African American Sports and Entertainment Group. The group of mostly black developers are planning to develop the site but the A’s are currently trying to purchase the other 50%, which would really complicate matters. Not that it’s not complicated already.

And then down in the minor leagues, there’s a bit of a mixed bag of news. The biggest news is that top infield prospect Jacob Wilson was placed on the minor league IL with a knee sprain. The former 1st-rounder has shot up the minor league ladder but will now need to recover before continuing his ascent. Pitcher Luis Medina’s rehab didn’t go great as he allowed five runs but at least pitched 2 ¹⁄₃ and made it out healthy. At least most of the other prospects seem to be doing well right now.
