‘Not ideal’ – Player admits he does not want to play Tottenham this month

Kieran Trippier has admitted that it is not ideal for the players to be involved in the post-season friendly scheduled between Tottenham and Newcastle in Australia.

Tottenham will take on the Magpies at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground in a post-season friendly on May 22, just three days after the two clubs end their Premier League campaigns.

While the trip would represent a homecoming for Ange Postecoglou, who is from the city, there has been a lot said about whether it is right for the players to be playing in such a fixture after a long and arduous season, particularly with the European Championship commencing in June.

England boss Gareth Southgate has admitted that it is not very good news for him since the likes of James Maddison could be part of the Euros squad travelling to Germany soon after.

Kieran Trippier is not keen on Tottenham match

Trippier, who could also be part of the Three Lions set-up for the big tournament in the summer, admitted that the players are not looking forward to the fixture.

When asked about the friendly, the Newcastle star told The Shield Gazette: “My expression says it all! It’s not ideal because it’s a tournament year, I understand why the club are doing it.

“I’ve done it at Tottenham and Madrid but from my own experience of it – in a tournament year (with the Euros and Copa America) it’s not ideal. But we’re players, we’ve got to do what’s right for the club, for the club to move forward.”

The game is going to be played in extremely low intensity, with both sides likely to use plenty of youngsters and name two different elevens for each half as the priority of both coaches would be to avoid any injuries.
