17 American doctors evacuated from Gaza amid escalation of conflict
Foreign media outlets have simultaneously reported on escalating conflicts in Gaza and ongoing Israeli attacks in various areas of the northern, central, and southern regions of the Gaza Strip, with 17 American doctors reportedly leaving Rafah in southern Gaza.
Voice of America stated in a report released on Saturday, May 18th, that “the United States evacuated 17 American doctors who were stranded in Gaza after Israel took control of the Rafah crossing in this city.”
This media outlet cited a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department reporting that “some of the American doctors stranded in Gaza have departed with the assistance of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem and have reached a safe area.”
This comes as nearly 80,000 civilians have been injured as a result of Israel’s relentless attacks in Gaza over the past several months, with healthcare facilities in the country almost entirely unable to provide comprehensive medical services.
Israel’s war cabinet approved an attack on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip about a week ago, following which the Rafah crossing, the only main entry point for goods and people, was closed off.
Israel’s attacks have since targeted various areas of Rafah, where over a million Palestinians have sought refuge, leading to thousands being displaced once again.
Palestinian media outlets have reported that the Al-Bureij and Al-Maghazi camps in the central Gaza Strip have been targeted by Israeli army artillery, along with the Jabalia camp, resulting in at least 14 Palestinians being injured.
