Mets Shut Out 8-0 By Fish In Game One

The Mets were shut out by the Marlins in a disappointing start to a three-game series in Miami on Friday evening. New York struggled offensively, going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position while leaving seven on base and managing just six hits in an 8-0 loss to the Fish. The pitching staff also struggled against the Marlins’ lineup, allowing 13 hits, four walks and notching just eight strikeouts.

Christian Scott took the mound for New York and endured a rough outing, allowing four runs on seven hits over four innings. He issued one walk and struck out three batters but ultimately took the loss.

The Marlins opened the scoring with a big second inning. Jesús Sánchez and Nick Gordon set the table with a pair of singles, followed by Otto López’s sacrifice fly to bring home the first run. With two outs, Scott couldn’t escape the jam, surrendering a single to Vidal Bruján before Nick Fortes launched a two-run home run, extending Miami’s lead to 4-0.

Josh Walker entered in relief in the fifth inning, pitching two innings while allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Walker kept the Marlins off the board in the fifth despite giving up a one-out double to Jake Burger. However, he ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a walk and a single before a wild pitch brought in a run. A sacrifice fly later in the frame made it 6-0.

Grant Hartwig took over in the seventh, striking out two and walking one. He returned for the eighth, where the Marlins added two more runs after Hartwig loaded the bases with no outs on a walk and two singles. A groundout and a subsequent single capped the scoring at 8-0.

DOWN ON THE FARM

Trayce Thompson has been mashing in Triple-A Syracuse, going 3-for-3 with three home runs, five RBI, two walks and a stolen base on Friday evening. The outfielder had a .663 OPS on May 3, which has now risen to .867.

ON DECK

Luis Severino (2-2, 3.00) will take the mound for New York on Saturday afternoon as the Mets look to bounce back in the second contest of a three-game set. Miami’s starter will be Braxton Garrett (0-0, 8.44). SNY will air the game at 4:10 p.m. ET.
