Storm damage insurance claims top $440,000,000 in Kansas for 2023
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Kansas Insurance Department (KID) is releasing new information Friday that puts a dollar amount to the storm damage recorded last year.
The KID announced in a press release on May 17 stating that more than 147,000 insurance claims were received by insurance companies in 2023 for storm damage. In total, these claims came out to more than $442,822,000.
“The Kansas Department of Insurance collects this data yearly to better understand the impact of storm events across Kansas,” said Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “This data is important to help the Department monitor trends in the marketplace.”
Kyle Strathman with the KID says information is collected each year from insurance companies writing property and casualty insurance in the state. This information includes the total claims along with the amount paid for each claim across several types of storm losses including hail, wind, water damage and other weather-related claim losses for homes and automobile policies.
Johnson County came in first for 2023 in terms of the highest amount of insurance claim losses with more than $69 million while Greeley was last at just over $21 million. You can find the full breakdown by county in the document below:
