Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have looked back on the predictions they and their fellow Sky Sports pundits made at the start of the season, with the former claiming that Paul Merson made the worst call by opining that Tottenham would finish in the bottom half of the table.
Spurs had a disastrous finish to last season, finishing in eighth place and failing to qualify for Europe for the first time since 2009.
There was a lot of uncertainty around Hotspur Way at the time and many did not look too favourably on the club’s decision to appoint Ange Postecoglou, who was unproven at the highest level.
As a result, there were a lot of gloomy predictions about the Lilywhites, with Merson insisting that they would finish in the bottom half after losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich (Sky Sports).
Neville has now said that there was never a chance of the former Arsenal man’s prediction coming true and he picked it as the worst call made by any of the Sky pundits.
The former Man Utd defender told Sky Sports: “It’s probably mine or Merse’s looking at that. Bournemouth I think are 11th at the moment, aren’t they? If they went down, then they would be 18th. That’s seven places out. Merse is seven places out really, isn’t he?!
“A lot of people wouldn’t have thought Bournemouth would go down. A lot of people wouldn’t have thought Tottenham would finish in the bottom half. They are out-there-predictions. I think Man United finishing in the top four. I think 99% of people would have said that would happen. It shocked everybody. For me, that (Man United finishing in the top four) isn’t the worst prediction.
“For me, the worst prediction is when you go out there, say something you believe and think you are a bit of an outlier, then it doesn’t happen – I’m going to go for (Merson’s prediction as the worst). Tottenham were never going to finish in the bottom half, were they?! Sorry, Merse.”

As outlandish as Merson’s prediction was, one can see the logic of why he made that call since Tottenham finished eighth last season and lost the man who scored 30 goals for them.
That perhaps shows the impressive job Postecoglou has done and also the excellent recruitment decisions that Spurs made last summer, with the likes of Vicario, Van de Ven and others proving fantastic additions.
