Turkish police detain 29 Afghan and Syrian refugees

The Turkish police recently announced the detention of 29 Afghan and Syrian asylum seekers in the city of Mugla who intended to enter Greece illegally.

According to Turkish media reports, the police of Turkey identified and detained asylum seekers who intended to migrate from Turkey to Greece and Europe in an “illegal” manner.

Based on reports, the detained asylum seekers were transferred to detention centers after their arrest, among whom two were smugglers.

Turkish media, citing police authorities, state that both smugglers have been referred to court.

Previously, Turkish police have repeatedly reported on the arrest of illegal Afghan asylum seekers during their crossing of the border between Turkey and Greece.

Turkey is one of the main routes for asylum seekers to reach Europe, where asylum seekers from various countries, including Afghanistan, travel to the country by paying thousands of dollars and accepting the risks of death.

The dire situation of Afghan refugees in neighboring countries exacerbates amid a worsening humanitarian crisis, marked by an increase in forced deportations by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey.

These countries, burdened by large refugee populations, are grappling with economic strain and political pressure, leading to harsher policies against asylum seekers.

Iran, hosting one of the largest refugee populations globally, has intensified its crackdown on undocumented migrants, particularly Afghan refugees. Facing economic challenges and domestic unrest, Iranian authorities have stepped up deportations, pushing many vulnerable individuals into uncertainty and danger.

Pakistan, home to millions of Afghan refugees for decades, has also escalated its efforts to repatriate asylum seekers.

With limited resources and security concerns, the Pakistani government has adopted stricter measures, resulting in the forced return of thousands of Afghans, despite the ongoing instability and violence in their home country. This has left many refugees stranded without adequate protection or support.
