Three things Man Utd must do to beat Arsenal at Old Trafford

Manchester United have had a dismal run of Premier League results since the international break and they have picked up only seven points from their last seven outings.

As a result, the Red Devils are three points adrift of both Chelsea and Newcastle United, who are seventh and sixth respectively with a superior goal difference.

With just three games remaining, United can’t afford to drop points if they want to qualify for Europe. Here are three things they must do to beat Arsenal today.

Man-mark Martin Odegaard

Just like Bruno Fernandes, Martin Odegaard is the most creative player in the Arsenal ranks. The Gunners captain has created 94 chances during the league season, only Fernandes has managed more (108).

The Norwegian had a relatively slow start to the season but his form has picked up over recent months. He has been a catalyst behind the Gunners’ fantastic league run since the turn of the year.

In our view, manager Erik ten Hag should instruct someone to man-mark Odegaard and take him out of the game. Scott McTominay could be entrusted with the role this afternoon.

Play through the wings

Arsenal’s main defensive strength has been their central defensive pairing. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have been brilliant with their tackles, clearances and ball recoveries.

However, there is a potential weak link in the full-back positions. Ben White has had a fine year, but Marcus Rashford has been his nemesis in the past with his pace and direct running.

Rashford has four goals and an assist in his last three outings against Arsenal. Alejandro Garnacho should also fancy his duel against Takehiro Tomiyasu, who is predominantly a right-back.

Don’t allow Arsenal to play through the middle

The Gunners have been a menace for opposition centre-backs with the ability to play through balls behind them. This is something United must guard against at Old Trafford.

We previously highlighted that Odegaard needs to be man-marked, but Arsenal also have Declan Rice, who is capable of making late runs into the box from central midfield.

Kai Havertz is another opponent United must be wary of. He has eight goals and five assists since mid-February. Forcing Arsenal to play out wide could be the way to go.
