Tyra Banks Says She Just Drank Alcohol for the First Time
Former America’s Next Top Model host and furry lover Tyra Banks celebrated her 50th birthday in style: She took a seaplane in Australia, hung out with family, and, apparently, sipped her first-ever adult beverage. At least, that’s according to a Wednesday interview Banks gave to People, in which she discussed getting older, growing more confident, and trying new things, like alcohol. “My mom and my best friend surprised me there, and it was so magical,” Banks told the outlet. “I even had an alcoholic drink for the first time! It wasn’t worth it. I was like, ‘This is nasty!’”
Prior to this taste test, Banks had practiced a sober lifestyle for years, TMZ reports, noting that she tried alcohol once before when she was 12. Given her reaction, it doesn’t seem she’ll be switching up her drinking habits anytime soon, though I am curious what she ordered. A piña colada offers a far different experience than an unbalanced vodka tonic from a dive bar, but I digress. Aside from the mysterious “nasty” drink, the former Dancing With the Stars host said she had an amazing time and is thrilled to tackle this milestone birthday despite its “granny” connotations.
“I could not wait to be 50,” Banks said in the People interview. “I felt it was a rite of passage to be my true self. I like to challenge misconceptions about aging by saying, ‘Child, I’m 50!’”
Banks did, however, mention that she was getting carded up until she turned 40. Visiting a casino with friends recently, a security guard told her she could go on in. When she asked if he needed to see her ID, he apparently told her, “No, girl, you good.” The nerve! Tyra will survive, though: She takes her Zoom meetings in a wig with no makeup and is busy being a “momma” to 8-year-old son York Banks Asla. “Fifty feels good,” she said.
