OAKLEY — A DUI crash early Monday morning killed a driver in rural East Contra Costa County, police said.
Victor Alfonso, 31, of Oakley, died after being rushed to Sutter Delta Hospital in an ambulance following the wreck, according to a statement from the City of Oakley.
Police said Contra Costa County Fire Protection crews came across the crash on southbound Bethel Island Road and East Cypress Road about 12:30 a.m. Monday. According to police, Alfonso was speeding, lost control of the vehicle and went up on the raised center median.
The car then hit a light pole on the driver’s side while sliding sideways across the center median.
Police said they discovered evidence that Alfonso had been drinking alcohol before the crash.
Fire crews cut Alfonso free from the wreckage and began performing medical rescue on him at the scene before putting him in an ambulance.
