British authorities announced on Wednesday that the detention of asylum seekers slated for transfer to Rwanda within the next 9 to 11 weeks has commenced.
Last month, the British Parliament passed legislation to facilitate the deportation of illegal asylum seekers to Rwanda.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak aims for the first flights to take place in July.
Images released on Wednesday by the UK Home Office show a man being loaded into a van by immigration officers and another person being escorted out of their home with handcuffs.
The UK Home Secretary James Cleverly stated in a Wednesday release: “Our enforcement teams are working swiftly to detain those who have no right to be here so we can carry out flights.”
This comes as assessments reveal that out of approximately 6,000 slated for transfer to Rwanda in the first phase, over half have gone missing.
Over 7,500 asylum seekers have illegally entered Britain this year via small boats from France. The British government says the new law prevents dangerous journeys of asylum seekers through the English Channel. Last week, five people, including a child, drowned on this route.
