A FASHIONISTA has revealed she’s refusing to wear the dress code stated for a gender reveal party.
She “freaked out” when she was told all guests had to wear white clothing to the family event.
She explained the situation on Reddit’s AITAH [Am I the a**hole] forum, posting under the handle u/Nyxxxie13.
The 26-year-old said her fiancé Dean’s brother Sam is expecting his first child and had the “audacity” to request a mom and dad gift as well as diapers for the baby.
She was planning to wear business casual for the gender reveal party until she found out Sam and his girlfriend Berta wanted all attendees to wear white.
Having “freaked out” about the dress code, she found a figure-hugging white jumpsuit to buy for the occasion.
“The style is pretty close to what I wear on a daily basis so I thought maybe I could pair this with black or maybe choose a color to go with it and use it afterward,” she said on Reddit.
“Sam loved the jumpsuit and immediately said yes.
“Not even 20 minutes go by and my MIL [mother-in-law] pulls me aside and says ‘I wouldn’t waste any money if I were you.
“‘Sam and his girlfriend, Berta, want us to wear all white because they are planning on spray painting the guests blue or pink – depending on the gender.
“‘I’m considering what to wear also because I don’t want any of my clothes ruined especially because I would wear a thing or two I use in court sessions, so please be mindful about that’ (MIL is an attorney).
“I had no idea that was his plan.
“Dean told me I was being inconsiderate for saying I was gonna wear black if they refuse to let me out of this paint mess.”
The woman revealed her mother-in-law was willing to also ignore the dress code and wear black for the gender reveal.
However, Sam felt “offended” that they were making a fuss about the plan and accused them of trying to “ruin” him and Berta’s day.
“I don’t know if I should just stay home and call it a day to avoid conflict or if I should go anyway,” she said.
“I also don’t know if I’m being an a**hole for not wanting to spend about $100 on a jumpsuit to wear it only once and throw it away.
“I won’t ask what his girlfriend thinks because 1- I don’t wanna risk pi**ing off a pregnant woman.
“2- they’ve been together for 5 months (she’s pregnant for 4 months), so I barely know her. She’s not a talker also, which doesn’t help at all.”
A stream of responses to the post argued gender reveal parties don’t usually involve giving gifts and thought it was unfair to spray paint the guests.
An overwhelming majority of people said she shouldn’t attend the event because the couple were expecting too much.
“You’re better off to stay home & avoid the drama that will overshadow this dumba** gender reveal,” one person said.
“People are going to be p***ed off big time. No one is going to enjoy the party.
“I’d consider helping MIL give the other guests a heads up that their clothing, hair, shoes, etc are going to be ruined by paint.
“And demanding gifts is beyond the pale bc [because] you know they’ll have an equally greedy grab of a baby shower too!”
The event involves celebrating the sex of the baby with friends and family.
Guests often learn whether the baby will be a boy or a girl at the same time as the parents.
Gender reveal parties are thrown after the 20-week scan, according to Online4Baby.
Guests are not necessarily expected to bring gifts, as they can do this at the baby shower or once the baby is born.
“Lol he’s known this woman for five months and she’s been pregnant for four of them? This is the funniest f**king s**t I’ve heard in a while lol!” another wrote.
“Their relationship will be over probably before the baby even pops out.
“I wouldn’t waste a single f**king cent on these insane people (and it sounds like a cash grab).
“Skip the entire party, do something fun, and then check social media for all the guests who are p***d as hell because their clothes got ruined unexpectedly!”
A third commenter advised the woman to bring paint coveralls to wear over her clothes.
But, confessed they wouldn’t go to an event where they were going to be covered in paint.
“Spraying your guests with paint isn’t a prank,” another added.
“Are they planning on having new clothes to give their guests?
“If I went to a party and got intentionally sprayed with paint by the hosts I’d leave (with whatever gift I brought).
“Also, the gift demand is tacky at the very least.”
