2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress: Jessica Gunning (‘Baby Reindeer’) on the rise

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority believe the trophy will go to Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”). The other potential nominees, per our racetrack odds, are Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer”), Diane Lane (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”) and Sandra Oh (“The Sympathizer”) — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, a leading five out of our 13 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Leigh for “Fargo”: Eric Deggans (NPR), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). She plays billionaire CEO Lorraine Lyon on Season 5 of FX’s anthology series, who’s the mother-in-law of Juno Temple‘s Dorothy “Dot” Lyon. This would mark Leigh’s first career Emmy nomination, though she also has an Oscar bid to her name for “The Hateful Eight” (2015).

Three of our Emmyologists — Ben Travers (Indiewire), Clayton Davis (Variety) and Kelly Lawler (USA Today) — instead believe Reis will prevail for “True Detective: Night Country.” Her character of Trooper Evangeline Navarro constantly spars with Jodie Foster‘s Chief Liz Danvers, as they’re both tasked with uncovering the whereabouts of multiple missing research scientists in Alaska. Reis’ prior claim to fame on the awards circuit was at the Gotham Awards and Independent Spirit Awards for “Catch the Fair One” (2021).

A pair of pundits — Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — forecast a victory for King for “Lessons in Chemistry.” Already this awards season, the former “How to Get Away with Murder” actress has garnered bids at the Critics Choice Awards and Image Awards for her role as Harriet Sloane, the next door neighbor and best friend of Brie Larson‘s Elizabeth Zott.

Gunning was just added to our predictions center this week for Netflix’s late release “Baby Reindeer,” and already Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) have her at #1 in their rankings. The English actress plays Martha Scott, whose overt flirtation with Richard Gadd‘s Donny Dunn kicks off an unexpected story over the course of seven episodes. This would be the first major awards notice for Gunning.

Finally, Emmy Expert Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby) goes out on a limb for Lane for “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” She inhabits the real-life part of Slim Keith, one of the many socialites who gets into drama surrounding author Truman Capote (Tom Hollander). Lane is a former Best Actress Oscar nominee for “Unfaithful” (2002), as well as a two-time Emmy contender for “Lonesome Dove” (1989) and “Cinema Verite” (2011), though she’s never won.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress category include Niecy Nash-Betts (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) in 2023, Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”) in 2022, Julianne Nicholson (“Mare of Easttown”) in 2021, Uzo Aduba (“Mrs. America”) in 2020 and Patricia Arquette (“The Act”) in 2019.
