LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A local counseling practice is providing free services to UL Lafayette students, faculty and staff following the tragic death by suicide of student Basil Brown.

Owner and director of Tree of Life Counseling Maria Istre in Lafayette emphasizes the importance of recognizing that everyone affected by a suicide, whether directly or indirectly, needs support and access to mental health services. Istre says the counseling center is offering six spots to any student or staff member seeking support after the tragic loss of fellow student Basil Brown.

"They've had quite a few people outside of us that have offered services. Whether that's peer support groups or individual counseling to be able to help support them at this difficult time," said Istre.

Istre says these types of tragedies have the potential to cause suicide contagion, where exposure to suicide or suicidal behavior of one or more individuals influences others to attempt suicide.

"It could be someone who have been have passive suicidal thoughts. Active thoughts or no thoughts at all. The reality becomes apparent that if can happen to me too, which is why reaching out for support is important," Istre explained.

Istre says contrary to popular belief, suicidal thoughts don't automatically mean someone is in critical condition.

"We don't automatically put you into a facility like most people would think," says Istre.

The severity and treatment of suicidal cases are determined through a process of evaluation. Suicide intervention involves addressing factors such as feelings of not belonging, a sense of burden and a loss of fear of death.

"That is the highest risk factor. Not just having an intent and a plan but having no fear can put you at a higher risk,"

She says the entire community bears the responsibility of normalizing mental health discussions, eliminating the shame and embarrassment associated with mental health struggles.

"Suicide is more common than I think people realize unfortunately. Approaching it as if you were going to the doctor when you're unwell. It's ok to reach out for help when life is not perfect,"

Tree of life counseling is offering the six sessions for free to UL students or staff.
