Shopper hits out at Lidl over ‘sneaky’ price change but is left red-faced when people point out her mistake

A SHOPPER has been left red-faced after hitting out at a bargain supermarket for a ‘sneaky price increase’ – because all was not as it seemed.

The customer – from Hawick, Roxburghshire – had nipped into their local Lidl to pick up a multipack of bottled water.

But they were fuming after noticing they had been charged £7.57 more than usual for their 24 bottles.

Posting a picture of their receipt on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group, they said: “Lidl and Aldi are now selling 12 packs of normal water and instead of charging £1.79 for a 12 pack they are charging 39p for each bottle.

“Beware of this or you will be paying nearly £10 for 24 bottles of 500ml standard water.”

The post quickly racked up more than 700 comments on the social media page.

But rather than being outraged, shoppers were quick to point out a mistake that the customer likely made.

One said: “Are you sure you didn’t buy a pack of 24 individual bottles, instead of the multi packs?”

A second echoed: “It was probably individual bottles, but were still in the plastic that holds them together for transportation.”

A third chimed in: “I got them today for £1.79 for 12. I think the others are individual bottles and you’ve picked a whole pack up.”

A fourth wrote: “I presume they picked up the individual ones. I’ve done it before and cashier asked if I wanted them or the multipack. Easy mistake when they are stacked near each other.”

Meanwhile a fifth added: “I think she bought 24 separate water bottles not a pack.”

And others rushed in to suggest an even better value option.

“Tap water’s free”, said one.

Another added: “I already pay for tap water, so I won’t be paying for water in plastic bottles.”

“I get mine out of the tap in this country we can drink tap water”, wrote a third.

Elsewhere in store, Lidl has announced the second week of its Garden Event is all about making your lawn look beautiful.

The budget supermarket dropped rugs, lights and parasols last week – but you can expect to find electric goods and practical pieces this week.

The second round of products will hit stores on Thursday (April 25) following last week’s bumper success.
