Shopping in the boy section can be hard — like many other moms have noticed, there are often significantly fewer gender-neutral and boy options than there are for girls. (Not that boys can’t wear pink or dresses if they wanted to, because we are all about empowering kids’ personal fashion choices!) Rihanna recently made comments about styling her sons RZA, 23 months, and Riot Rose, 8 months, who she shares with A$AP Rocky, and it’s causing us to raise our eyebrows a little.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, the “Diamonds” singer shared her “biggest hack” for dressing her sons. “When I dress them, I always try to dress them like Rocky,” she told the outlet. “Because I always envision dressing a girl, right? We all do as women, like, ‘Oh, I’m going to dress her in these cute little things,’ but then you get sons and you’re like, ‘What do I do?’ and I was like, ‘You know what, I have the biggest hack — their dad.'”
Hmm … not that the rapper doesn’t have great fashion, but where does she shop to find clothes for her boys that match him? It almost seems like finding little designer ‘fits for her boys might just be harder than, you know, just picking out their own clothes? Then again, maybe she has a stylist or assistant to help her. Little boys matching their dad is super cute!
But also, Rihanna could easily find cute kids’ clothes on H&M or Target’s website. As a mom of three boys, I’ll be the first to admit there are generally cuter things available for little girls, but I still dress my sons adorably with only a tiny fraction of Riri’s budget. (Olivia Munn also has amazing style for her 2-year-old son Malcolm, BTW.)
Not to mention, when Riot was first born, the happy parents dressed him in pink, so I’m not sure why she feels the need to only find “boy clothing” now, when she could easily keep pushing past the gendered stereotypes like she has before.
Part of her frustration could be because she does desire to have a daughter one day. Earlier this month, the “Umbrella” singer opened up about wanting to have a little girl. Interview Magazine asked her “how many more kids do you want?” and she responded, “As many as god wants me to have.”
She added, “I don’t know what god wants, but I would go for more than two. I would try for my girl. But of course if it’s another boy, it’s another boy.”
And now that Rihanna’s a mom, she admitted that she feels “bummy as sh*t” next to Rocky. “I spend my time getting the kids dressed to death, and then I’m like, ‘What’s the most comfortable outfit to wear around them?’” she said. “’What’s not going to feel uncomfortable on their face or on their body or make me feel like I can’t hold them properly?’ Moms are lazy dressers in real life.”
We think Rihanna looks as amazing as always, but another reason she thinks she lazy is probably because she’s been designing kids’ shoes with Puma. She told ET yesterday, “It’s really fun, it’s cute to see my kids like wear stuff that … I made and designed. It’s really incredible.”
Maybe she can design kids’ clothes one day too, so we can have another option of cute outfits!
These celebs have the fiercest pregnancy style, and we can’t stop staring.
