Pour one out for your Witcher.
“The Witcher,” Netflix’s epic fantasy series, will end with Season 5, the streaming service announced Thursday.
The just-announced final season will shoot back-to-back with Season 4, which just entered production in the U.K. Per Netflix, Seasons 4 and 5 will adapt the remaining books of author Andrzej Sapkowski’s “The Witcher” novels, “Baptism of Fire,” “The Tower of the Swallow” and “Lady of the Lake,” and bring the popular series to a satisfying end.
Seasons 4 and 5 will star Liam Hemsworth as monster-slayer Geralt of Rivia. Hemsworth is taking over the lead role from Henry Cavill, who exited the series after Season 3. Other cast members include Anya Chalotra (Yennefer of Vengerberg), Freya Allan (Princess Cirilla of Cintra), Joey Batey (Jaskier), Laurence Fishburne (Regis), Eamon Farren (Cahir), and Sharlto Copley (Leo Bonhart). Creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich serves as showrunner and executive producer.
Here’s the Season 4 logline, via Netflix: “After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out Season 3, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding one another again.”
“The Witcher” was a sensation when it premiered in 2019, and its first season is still among Netflix’s top 10 most-watched English-language series ever. Its second season was nominated for three Emmys in 2022, for fantasy/sci-fi costumes, special effects, and stunt coordination. It spawned a live-action prequel limited series, “The Witcher: Blood Origin,” starring Michelle Yeoh, and two animated film spinoffs, “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf” and the upcoming “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.”
