Four savvy ways to bring items in need of repair back to life

TV hit The Repair Shop is on BBC One on Wednesday – and while we can’t all mend treasures like its host Jay Blades and the experts, some fixes are simple.

Here are a few easy ideas to bring things back to life.

NEW CHAPTER: If the pages are starting to fall out of a beloved book, set them aside in the right order.

Apply a thin layer of acid-free book (or binding) glue to the spine, spreading it out with a lolly stick or similar.

Line up the missing pages and attach them to the spine of the book, then press gently.

Hold the book closed with a rubber band and weigh down for at least 24 hours.

POT LUCK: To fix a ceramic vase or broken crockery, sand the broken edges with fine sandpaper.

Apply a thin layer of glue — try Loctite Super Glue Precision (£3 at Dunelm) — to both the vase itself and the side of the broken piece.

Fit the pieces together and hold them for at least two minutes.

Take the stickiness off some masking tape by running it over your jumper, then apply it to the cracked vase, so it holds the pieces in place without pulling them when you remove it.

Leave for half a day and scrape away any excess glue after the fix is complete.

SOCK SAVIOUR: To mend a holey sock, place it inside out with a tennis ball inside it behind the gap.

Thread a needle, tying a knot at the end of the string, then stitch across the hole, starting on one side and repeating until you reach the other side and the hole is closed.

Knot your cotton and snip off any loose threads.

FURNITURE FIX: To get pen marks off of a wooden table, use bicarbonate of soda.

Add one teaspoon to a little water to make a paste.

Spread this over the stain and wait a few seconds, then gently rub back and forth to get the ink out.

Wipe with a clean, damp cloth to finish.
