Ripley viewers switch off Andrew Scott series after Netflix ‘totally kills show’ with ‘annoying’ decision
RIPLEY viewers switched off the new series after they claimed that Netflix ‘totally kills’ the show.
The new drama featured a star-studded cast which includes the likes of Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn and Dakota Johnson.
The new Netflix production is based off Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Set in the 1960’s, the eight-part series follows the journey of con-man Tom (Andrew Scott) who is sent on a gripping journey across Europe.
But the producers of the show decided to shoot the entire series in black and white, an artistic move that divided fans who tuned in.
After they watched parts of the thriller, viewers took to social media in their droves as they just couldn’t get past the noir feel of the show.
One fan stated: “Ripley isn’t for me. Why? Black & White. Black & White movies are not appealing to me whatsoever, never have been and never will be.”
“There was no need to shoot ripley in black and white. Annoying,” commented a second.
This was whilst a third echoed: “Turning off #Ripley at ep 2. The black & white is pretentious and casting is bizarre!”
And a fourth said: “Why on earth is Ripley filmed in black and white? Surely the only reason to not film in colour previously was technology. Totally killed it for me.”
The director previously opened up his mindset behind the cinematic decision.
He told Vanity Fair: “The edition of the Ripley book I had on my desk had an evocative black-and-white photograph on the cover.
“As I was writing, I held that image in my mind. Black and white fits this story–and it’s gorgeous.”
Although other Netflix fans seem to have more of an open mind as they say they like aspects of the series, but they still questioned the lack of colour.
One viewer pondered: “I don’t know if black & white was the right choice for “Ripley”. Or it just doesn’t look very pretty. And it doesn’t look enough like something supposed to be set decades ago.”
Another stated: “#Ripley in Black & White made no sense…”
“Not sure about the decision to make the series black & white. Still undecided if it adds anything, but leaning toward ‘no’,” commented an additional fan.
As someone else added: “I haven’t finished Ripley yet and I think it visually looks great, but I do wonder if the choice to go black and white contributes to the static feeling problem that I think it has.”
In the show, the lead is hired by a wealthy Italian (Kenneth Lonergan) to convince his son (Johnny Flynn) to return back home to the US from Italy.
But in order to live the life he wants to, Tom will have to build a web of lies and navigate complexities like deceit, fraud and murder.
This is the first adaptation of the popular crime tale since Matt Damon previously starred the classic 1999 movie.
He was supported by a host of star faces including Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett.
