I thrifted a designer coat for $8 but didn’t know what I had – my roommate shrieked when she told me its true value
A WOMAN who thrifted a designer coat for $8 was stunned when she discovered its real value.
Her roommate shrieked when she saw it and revealed she had scored a classic designer item.
Up to that point, she was blissfully oblivious to the provenance of this thrift store item.
It came from a fashion house with a long lineage but she had never heard of it
But she knows all about it now and has shared her thrilling thrift haul in a Reddit post.
“I once found a gorgeous, classic Burberry trench coat for $8 in college,” she said.
“My dumb a** had no idea what Burberry was and didn’t recognize the plaid lining.”
It was a close call because the iconic look meant nothing to her and she nearly passed it over.
Burberry is classic British luxury fashion house that was established in 1856.
Its statement looks is worn by celebrities and mere mortals alike.
A classic Burberry trench coat costs nearly $2,500 new, so she bagged a bargain and a half.
“I was so close to choosing a different coat to take home. I dumped my clothing haul out on the couch when I got home but my roommate gasped ‘Is that a Burberry?'”
But the penny still hadn’t dropped and she remained ignorant of her designer item.
“I just shrugged but my roommate quickly filled me in.”
They looked online and only then did she begin to get excited when she realized how much these classic coats cost brand new.
“It had a few small stains on it that came out easily at the dry cleaners,” she said.
“But other than that it was in mint condition. I wore it all the time for over a decade,” she added.
This coat is still going strong and its longevity might suggest it justifies its eye-watering price.
“I’ve gone up a size or two since college and the shoulders were too snug, so I traded the Burberry to a friend,” she wrote.
In return, she took possession of yet another designer fashion item, a Hermés scarf.
But she remains affectionate for her thrift store jackpot find.
“I miss the trench, but I think it was more than a fair trade.
“The scarf is beautiful, but I have no idea how to wear it.”
She remained hopeful that she might find another pre-loved Burberry coat.
“I see Burberry trenches aren’t too expensive secondhand, so maybe I’ll pick up another one,” she said.
