World Food Programme warns of rising malnutrition cases in Afghanistan
The World Food Programme has announced that the number of malnourished individuals in health centers in some areas of Afghanistan tripled last year.
The organization stated on Monday, April 9th, through a video on its network that currently, 2,700 health centers are operational across Afghanistan, providing medical services for children and women.
The World Food Programme has warned of approximately three million children suffering from severe malnutrition in 2024.
Mona Shaikh, head of the malnutrition department at the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, emphasized that this agency could provide treatment for 1.6 million malnourished children in Afghanistan this year.
According to her, the organization estimated last year that 800 pregnant and lactating women would suffer from malnutrition, but this number increased to 1.2 million.
This comes as concerns about the increase in the number of malnourished individuals, especially among women and children in Afghanistan, have heightened.
Meanwhile, the United Nations and several human rights organizations have warned of increasing poverty and hunger due to the lack of budget for providing humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
