Reflecting the past: A Fond Farewell to The Gregs

PLOS Genetics finds itself at a juncture marked by both reflection and anticipation. Over the years, the journal has excelled under the leadership of Gregory S. Barsh and Gregory P. Copenhaver, or ‘The Gregs’ as they are affectionately referred to by us all. The journal has been guided by the commitment of The Gregs to uphold the central ethos of PLOS Genetics to be a journal created by and for working scientists.

2024 marks almost two decades of exceptional leadership and PLOS is incredibly grateful to the pioneers who have steered PLOS Genetics with dedication and passion. It is with mixed emotions that we, now, say goodbye – ending an era of Editors-in-Chief, who have played a pivotal role in shaping the journal into the reputable and remarkable platform it is today.

Quoting Veronique Kiermer, our Chief Scientific Officer, “It’s been a real privilege to work with the Gregs and I’ve learned a lot from their commitment to making open science work for their research community. Their dedication to the spirit of PLOS and to their community meant that we were always at the interface of the benefits of open science for the global research enterprise and what it means practically for researchers.”

Expressing gratitude for The Gregs contributions is a humbling task, as words seem almost insufficient to capture the profound impact they have had on shaping our endeavors and PLOS Genetics. Their selfless dedication and time invested have been instrumental in building a journal that not only garners recognition but, more significantly, earns the trust of the genetic and genomics community of scientists. We express our deepest appreciation for their tireless efforts and a huge and heartfelt thank you to The Gregs for their exceptional stewardship, guidance, shared knowledge, and passion. Their influence has been immeasurable, and we are profoundly grateful for the indelible mark they leave on our collective journey.

Change, however, is an inherent part of growth, and as we bid farewell to The Gregs. PLOS and PLOS Genetics are committed to preserving the legacy The Gregs have contributed to and that has defined us, and we have full confidence in the continued success of the journal.

As we embark on this new chapter, our deepest gratitude resides with The Gregs who will continue to support PLOS Genetics as academic editors. PLOS wishes them the very best as they embark on new journeys!
