Man arrested after e-bike hit and run leaves cyclist fighting for life
An e-bike rider has been left with ‘serious life-threatening injuries’ after being hit by a driver who police believe to be under the influence of drink and drugs.
A 41-year-old man riding an e-bike in Plymouth was involved in a hit-and-run on Friday evening.
It was reported that a silver Vauxhall Insignia collided with an electric bike, before the car driver then left the scene of the crash.
Police have confirmed that a man in his twenties was arrested on suspicion of ‘driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs’.
A heavy police presence was reported in the area this weekend, with around 12 police cars and 20 officers on the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning.
In a statement, a Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: ‘Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a serious road traffic collision on Alma Road at the junction with Outland Road, Plymouth.
‘Officers were called at around 11pm on Friday, March 29, where it was reported that a collision had occurred involving a silver Vauxhall Insignia and a Sur-Ron Electric Bike.
‘The 41-year-old male rider of the Electric Bike sustained serious life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. His next of kin are aware.
‘The Vauxhall Insignia did not stop at the scene. Police would like the public’s help tracing a silver Vauxhall Insignia registration FP09FYD.
‘It’s believed this vehicle is in the Plymouth area and will have front end damage.
‘A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.
‘An investigation was carried out at the scene and officers from the Roads Policing Team would like to thank the public for their patience whilst this took place.
