Traffic incidents kill 949 in past 6 months across Afghanistan
The Ministry of Interior of the Taliban administration recently announced in a press conference that in the past six months, 949 people have lost their lives due to traffic accidents across the country.
Abdul Matin Qaneh, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, stated in a press conference in Kabul on Thursday, March 28th, that 1978 traffic incidents have been recorded in the country over the past six months.
The ministry’s spokesperson added that as a result of these traffic incidents across the country, 949 individuals lost their lives.
This comes as the Taliban administration cabinet recently instructed relevant departments in its latest session to prepare a plan to prevent traffic incidents in the country.
In this session, the Taliban cabinet tasked the Ministry of Interior to coordinate with the Supreme Court and the Ministries of Transportation, Civil Aviation, and Public Benefits to prepare a plan and necessary traffic measures to determine the speed limits of vehicles on highways, in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office.
Traffic incidents are considered one of the main causes of death in Afghanistan, with at least one or several incidents being recorded daily in various parts of the country.
In the latest incident following a traffic accident on the Sarpul-Shibarghan highway, a man and a woman lost their lives, and three others were injured.
A multitude of factors exacerbates traffic incidents in Afghanistan. These include the absence of comprehensive traffic laws, widespread reckless driving practices, poorly maintained roads, inadequate signage, and rampant speeding. Together, these elements contribute to a hazardous environment on Afghan roads, leading to frequent and often deadly accidents.
Addressing these issues comprehensively is essential to mitigate the high toll of lives lost and injuries sustained in traffic accidents in the country.
