‘What a silly argument’ – Simon Jordan defends Spurs decision to raise ticket prices

Simon Jordan rubbished the idea that Tottenham Hotspur are trying to cater to tourists by increasing the season ticket prices, insisting that football is not immune to the general inflationary trends.

Tottenham have decided to increase season ticket prices by an average of 6 per cent, with the decision not going down well with large swaths of the fan base.

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust have said that they are ‘dismayed’ by the club’s move, with many questioning why they felt the need to do that at a time when they are posting big profits.

Some have raised the worry that regular working-class fans will be priced out of attending matches and that the club are looking to sell expensive matchday tickets to tourist supporters or so-called ‘plastic fans’ instead.

When this suggestion was put to Postecoglou last week, he strongly condemned calling overseas supporters as such, pointing out that they have to be incredibly passionate about Spurs to travel halfway around the world to watch the side play (Football.London).

Simon Jordan defends Daniel Levy and Tottenham

Jordan has insisted that it is silly to argue that Tottenham’s motivation for increasing prices is to sell tickets to tourists.

The former Crystal Palace owner told talkSPORT: “You have 50,000 season ticket holders at Tottenham Hotspur. Then you put in the away allocation, so you are talking about four or five thousand tickets.

“You are suggesting that the nature of an international football club, that has got players playing in it from all over the world, is the reason why prices have gone up by 6%, i.e. the first rise in five years, is because of the global success of the football club brings in a few fans that don’t live in this country?! What a silly argument.

Daniel Levy put the price up because he can generate 6% more money – why is football immune? Why does every other part of society have a cost-based increase? I am basing my argument upon the commercial reality of life.”

One can legitimately argue the merits of increasing prices and removing senior concessions and critique the same without levelling ill-thought-out accusations of the club attempting to sell tickets to tourists or so-called ‘plastic fans’
