Report: Premier League side are angry that Tottenham deal has been overlooked

The Mirror report that Nottingham Forest are furious the Premier League did not take Brennan Johnson’s sale to Tottenham into account while calculating whether they complied with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Forest have been hit with a four-point deduction at the recommendation of an independent commission after they broke profit and sustainability regulations by £34.5m.

It is explained that Forest have one week to appeal the decision and that they are particularly furious that Johnson’s sale was not taken into account.

The club sold the winger to Tottenham for £47.5m on deadline day last summer and while that fee would have seen the Midlands side remain within the limits, they missed the clear deadline of June 30 set by the Premier League to compute financial results.

It is explained that Forest have argued that they were merely showing smart business practice by holding out for a higher fee, having rejected a much lower bid of around £30m from Brentford for Johnson in mid-June.

Forest’s argument will not hold much water, given that the Premier League had clearly set the deadline. However, it would make sense for the deadline to be moved to the end of the transfer window in the future so that there is not a conflict of interest while clubs sell their assets.

If Forest’s punishment is upheld, that would also send a clear message to Chelsea, who would have no choice but to sell the likes of Conor Gallagher before the end of June.
