On the eve of the new academic year in Afghanistan, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai once again called for reopening schools and universities for girls.
Karzai stated in a post on the X network on Sunday, March 17, “On the eve of the new school year, once again, I ask the Taliban government to open the doors of schools and universities to Afghan girls and provide better opportunities for education and advancement so that our country can be self-sufficient, independent, and a rival to its competitors.”
The former president emphasized that learning and education are essential for any human society’s survival, growth, honour, and liberation.
However, for nearly three years, girls in the country have been deprived of education, unable to attend schools and universities, learn, and consequently serve their families and their country.
Karzai has repeatedly advocated for reopening schools and universities for girls, emphasizing that acquiring knowledge is the pathway to every human society’s survival, growth, honour, and liberation.
The harsh policies and restrictions imposed by the Taliban since they took power have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
Among these policies is banning girls beyond the sixth grade from attending school and university, severely limiting their access to education and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Additionally, the Taliban have prevented women and girls from working with aid agencies and domestic organizations, further restricting their ability to contribute to society and worsening the already dire situation in the country.
These measures not only violate fundamental human rights but also hinder the progress and development of Afghanistan, leaving its people, especially women and girls, in a state of deep vulnerability and marginalization.
