NYS Senate and Assembly reject proposed changes to school aid formula

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)--- The New York State Senate and Assembly have released their own budgets laying out what they would like to see included in the final state budget.

Both the Senate and Assembly reject the governor’s plan to make changes to the formula that determines funding for school districts.

"We increased the governor’s education spending by $1.2 billion to a total of $46.1 billion. We are rejecting changes to foundation aid," said Senate Majority Leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Both houses proposed $1 million dollars for a foundation aid study. While Hochul doesn’t negotiate in public, she weighed in on the idea of a study.

"That is how you would define kicking a can down the road if it is something in that vain," said Hochul. "I’m open to all ideas, but I know where I stand on these issues."

At a press conference on Monday, Stewart-Cousins shared the reasoning behind wanting a study.

"We think the way it’s been working, since we finally got full funding of the foundation aid formula for the first-time last year, we oughta see how that works and not change it and not change it in the absence of other changes we know could be made."

The Senate and Assembly are expected to vote on their budgets on Thursday. The governor is hoping to have a finalized state budget by the end of this month.
